TRACKING THE DREAM

A SUMMARY IS PRESENTED OF THE UMTA (URBAN MASS TRANSPORTATION ADMINISTRATION) REPORT ON 10 TRANSPORT SYSTEMS AIMED AT IMPROVING ACCESS TO AND MOVEMENT THROUGH CONGESTED URBAN AREAS. THE TECHNOLOGICAL MATURITY AND TECHNICAL PROBLEMS OF EACH SYSTEM ALONG WITH SUGGESTED AREAS OF FURTHER DEVELOPMENT ARE REVIEWED. THE UMTA REPORT FOCUSES ON 2 KINDS OF TRANSPORT: FAST TRANSIT LINK AND CIRCULATION AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS. THE FORMER USE HIGH SPEED, HIGH CAPACITY VEHICLES SIMILAR BUT SUPERIOR TO THOSE USED ON PRESENT DAY RAILWAY, WHEREAS THE LATTER ARE TOTALLY NEW MODES OF TRANSPORT FOR DENSE URBAN AREAS, THE CHARACTERISTICS OF WHICH INCLUDE SLOWER SPEEDS, SHORTER DISTANCES, AND A RANDOM PATTERN OF PASSENGER BOARDING AND DISEMBARKATION. /TRRL/
