Improved Exclusion Barriers for Desert Tortoises
The California Department of Transportation currently lacks effective means of excluding Agassiz's desert tortoises, a threatened species, from entering highway rights-of-way and being struck by vehicles. Exclusionary devices known as tortoise guards, where no action on the part of a driver are needed to prevent access, are investigated. At present, there is little information on their effectiveness or long-term maintenance requirements.
