A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS IN NINETEEN COUNTRIES

INVENTORIES OF HIGHWAY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT WERE INITIATED IN 35 COUNTRIES INDICATING A TOTAL OF 3,000 PROJECTS. THIS STUDY BY THE INTERNATIONAL ROAD FEDERATION WAS DESIGNED TO CREATE AN INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION ON CURRENT HIGHWAY RESEARCH TO REDUCE UNNECESSARY AND WASTEFUL DUPLICATION OF EFFORT. THE INFORMATION OBTAINED WAS TURNED OVER TO THE HIGHWAY RESEARCH INFORMATION SERVICE FOR COMPUTER PROCESSING AND STORAGE. INCREASED INTEREST HAS BEEN GENERATED IN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AND IN INFORMATION EXCHANGE FROM THIS STUDY. ANOTHER IMPORTANT ASPECT IS REFLECTED IN THE DISCOVERY OF SOME PROJECTS OF SPECIAL INTEREST IN ALL OF THE COUNTRIES INVENTORIED TO DATE. A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS IS PRESENTED OF THE RESULTS ACHIEVED, AND CONTRASTS AND SIMILARITIES OF SPECIAL INTEREST IN VARIOUS COUNTRIES SUMMARIZED. THE INTERNATIONAL ROAD FEDERATION IS SEEKING TO PROVIDE FOR A CONTINUOUS REPORTING OF CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS FROM ALL COUNTRIES VISITED AND MANY OTHERS.
