MEXICO CITY'S METRO PAYS ITS WAY

MEXICO CITY HAS RECENTLY OPENED A THIRD RAPID TRANSIT LINE, BRINGING TO 25.5 THE NUMBER OF MILES TRAVERSED BY THE SYSTEM. PATRONAGE HAS BEEN RISING AT THE RATE OF 2% PER MONTH, AND 1971 REVENUES ARE EXPECTED TO EXCEED OPERATING EXPENSES, INCLUDING PAYROLL. THE SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN HANDLING ONE MILLION PASSENGERS DAILY IN THE NEAR FUTURE. THE SYSTEM NOW OPERATES 537 CARS IN 6- AND 9-CAR TRAINS. OWING TO THE STAGGERING OF WORK HOURS, THE SYSTEM EXPERIENCES A CONTINUOUS "PEAK" FROM 5:30 AM TO 12:30 AM, AFTER WHICH IT SHUTS DOWN FOR MAINTENANCE. THIS CONSISTENT SERVICE LEVEL IS ONE OF THE MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS TO THE PROFITABILITY OF THE SYSTEM. DURING JUNE 1971 THE SYSTEM WILL PLAY HOST TO A MEETING OF THE INSTITUTE FOR RAPID TRANSIT.
