Development of the flexicurve locomotive bogie
UGL started designing bogies in the 1990’s in response to the need for a lightweight locomotive bogie for intermodal and bulk haulage. The resulting three-axle pedestal leg bogie has evolved over a number of generations and has been a strong serviceable bogie for general freight and heavy haul applications over the last 20 years. However, the largest through-life cost for a bogie is wheel replacement, and the pedestal leg bogie, with its limited control of wheel set behaviour, is not optimal in this regard. This paper outlines the development of its successor, the Flexicurve three-axle locomotive bogie.
