TOWARD MEASUREMENT OF THE COMMUNITY CONSEQUENCES OF URBAN FREEWAYS

THE PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER IS TO PROPOSE A STRATEGY FOR QUANTITATIVELY ESTIMATING THE COMMUNITY OR SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES OF TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS. SPECIFICALLY, A NEW MEASURE - THE RESIDENTIAL LINKAGE - IS DEFINED AND ITS IMPORTANCE DEMONSTRATED THROUGH REFERENCE TO THE SOCIOLOGICAL LITERATURE. THE APPLICATION OF THIS MEASURE TO THE SPATIAL DEFINITION OF URBAN COMMUNITIES AND THE EVALUATION OF ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION PLANS IS THEN ILLUSTRATED. /AUTHOR/
