DEVELOPMENT PATTERNS IN AMERICAN CITIES

MATHEMATICAL MODELS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED TO ANALYZE URBAN GROWTH. STUDIES WERE MADE IN HARTFORD, CONN., BALTIMORE, MD., WASHINGTON, D.C., AND SEVEN IOWA CITIES. FINDINGS HAVE SHOWN THAT THE STANDARD OF LIVING IS BECOMING A MAJOR FACTOR IN DEVELOPMENT PATTERNS. THE INDIVIDUAL IS BECOMING MORE CONCERNED WITH OTHER FACTORS BESIDES TRANSPORTATION. THE METHODS USED IN THESE STUDIES ARE SUBJECT TO IMPROVEMENT AND REFINEMENT. FORMER CONCEPTS OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT ARE RAPIDLY CHANGING ALONG WITH SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES PARTICULARLY AS THEY RELATE TO THE RISING STANDARD OF LIVING.
