WHAT ABOUT FUTURE MARKETING OBJECTIVES?

AT A MARKETING WORKSHOP THAT WAS PART OF A CONFERENCE SPONSORED BY THE MAGAZINE, TWO MAJOR CRITICISMS WERE LEVELED AT RAILROAD MANAGEMENT: (1) IT HAS NEVER ESTABLISHED COST CENTERS FOR THE VARIOUS FUNCTIONS AND OPERATIONS OF THE INDUSTRY, SO THAT IT HAS NO GRASP OF THE SOURCES OF PROFIT AND DEFICIT; (2) IT HAS NO CONCEPT OF MARKETING, SO THAT IT IS UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE POTENTIAL RIDERSHIP THAT IT BELIEVES IN A VAGUE WAY TO WANT RAIL SERVICE.
