Field Operation Trial of 40-Metre Road Train

Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) commissioned the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) Group, to conduct a field operation trial of a 40.0 m AB-triple vehicle to improve the productivity and efficiency of livestock movement in Queensland, Australia. The assessment is predominantly desktop-based and used aerial imagery, road data and geometry collected from survey vehicles in order to assess routes for their suitability to accommodate vehicles of various levels. The field operation trial used sensors and cameras affixed to the subject vehicle, which was then driven on the route proposed for access. The trial was undertaken to visually inspect and physically analyse the performance of a subject vehicle on the route. The outcome of the trial could then be used to verify or complement the desktop-based route assessment. This paper describes the method and outcome of the Queensland Livestock AB-triple vehicle trial on the Warrego Hwy and how this method can be used to help inform access decisions.
