WORK-TRIP DATA

TWO WORK-TRIP QUESTIONS WERE INCLUDED ON CENSUS BUREAU "LONG FORMS" ANSWERED BY A 15% SAMPLE OF THE POPULATION: "WHERE DID YOU WORK LAST WEEK?" AND "HOW DID YOU GET TO WORK (PRIVATE AUTOMOBILE DRIVER/PASSENGER, BUS, STREETCAR, SUBWAY, ELEVATED, RAILROAD, TAXICAB, ON FOOT, WORKED AT HOME)?" GEOGRAPHIC CODES AND CODING PROCEDURES FOR ANALYZING THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS ARE DESCRIBED. AN IMPORTANT CONSTRAINT IS THAT, BECAUSE 1960 DATA INDICATED A LOSS OF ONLY 5% OF ALL WORK TRIPS IF TRIPS BETWEEN CERTAIN NONADJACENT SMSA'S WERE EXCLUDED, ONLY TRIPS WITHIN A PREDETERMINED CODING AREA WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE CENSUS PRODUCT. THIS CONSTRAINT WAS ADOPTED TO PLACE A LIMIT ON CERTAIN MANUAL PROCESSING OPERATIONS. FIVE TYPES OF DATA SUMMARIES, FROM TRACT TO SMSA LEVEL, ARE NOTED BRIEFLY ALONG WITH THE DATA CORRELATIONS (AGE, SEX, INCOME, ETC.) FOR EACH TYPE. SPECIAL TABULATIONS BY TRAFFIC ZONE ARE NOW BEING PLANNED WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION.
