The Model and Algorithm for Intercity Railway Train Operation Scheme in China

The unique passenger flow characteristics of intercity railway determine a intercity train should be operated as a way of public transportation. There are two ways that railway passenger may purchase a ticket. One that a passenger purchases a ticket in advance, the other is that a passenger purchases a ticket when he arrives in a railway station, depending on both frequency and seats assignment of intercity train operation. Meantime, the way of purchasing tickets affects passenger travel time to a large extent. Taking account of ways of purchasing tickets, this paper developed a multi-objective chance-constrained model to investigate intercity railway train operation plan to minimize both train operation cost and passenger travel time. An application of a double-layer genetic algorithm manages a lot of constraints in the model skillfully and avoids generating infeasible solution. Therefore, the algorithm can search an optimal solution rapidly along the optimal direction. For illustration purpose, an intercity railway train operation plan is obtained by using the model and algorithm. The result indicates that the model commendably balances the operation cost and passengers travel time, and is able to describe practical situation properly, whose convergence result is highly satisfactory.
