Durability Indexes via Cantabro Testing for Unaged, Laboratory-Conditioned, and One-Year Outdoor-Aged Asphalt Concrete

Ensuring good durability is an important aspect of materials selection, mixture design and construction of asphalt pavements. Over time, asphalt durability is affected by binder aging, air voids, mixture properties, and other factors. Most durability tests are concerned with binder testing and do not consider the entire mixture (including air voids). This paper’s overall objective was to evaluate durability characteristics of dense graded asphalt mixtures using the Cantabro test for a variety of conditions. Recent efforts have shown the Cantabro test output of mass loss to be promising as a durability index for dense graded asphalt. The first key finding of this paper was that mass loss versus air voids relationships were fairly linear for the conditions tested. Air voids had appreciable effects on Cantabro mass loss, reinforcing the notion that air voids should be considered in laboratory mixture conditioning protocols. The paper’s second key finding was that the data collected emphasized the need to consider material compatibility and overall mixture characteristics for durability assessments. The paper’s final key finding was that AASHTO R30-Mixture Conditioning of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) simulated less than one year of outdoor aging in Mississippi (as measured by the Cantabro test), while 28 days in a 60°C oven approximated one year of outdoor aging very well.
