Truck tire noise has been under study by SAE groups for many years. While not thoroughly explored, the data have been treated enough for the Systems Committee to continue setting up a test procedure. Four important matters still not settled are: Description of a worn tire; Definition of a standard road; A means to measure low sound level tires; Proper way to assess duration (lingering) and tonal content of tire noise. While the need for a standard has been growing, further evaluation of data and establishment of a definitive measuring technique is at least a year or two away. Consequently, for immediate needs, the Systems Committee has proposed an interim test based on the slow A-scale reading.
