Evaluating vehicle activated signs on rural roads
Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) have been widely implemented as speed management measures across Australia and New Zealand. The main types of VAS in operation are speed limit advisory and hazard warning signs. This study, conducted as a retrospective before and after evaluation, was aimed at measuring the effectiveness of VAS in lowering speeds and crashes on rural roads. The study also analysed the effectiveness of VAS by sign type and configuration. It involved pooling data from jurisdictional level evaluations in Victoria, Queensland and New Zealand and raw data from South Australia.
