AAAE/ARFF Working Group ARFF Professional Designation Program

This brief article describes the aircraft rescue fire fighting (ARFF) professional designation program, launched in July 2013 by the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) and the ARFF Working Group. The program has two levels: Airport Master Fire Fighter (AMF) and Airport Fire Officer (AFO). These certification programs are designed to fill a void in the professional development for ARFF personnel. AMF, the first level, covers the FAA regulatory and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) industry standards in the ARFF field. The second level, AFO, requires the completion of the AMF level, an ARFF-related applied research project, and the 40-hour Incident Command/Management Level Training as well as the National Fire Academy (NFA)/Emergency Management Institute (EMI) exercise development certifications. Readers are referred to www.aae.org for more information about the program. This article is from a special issue on ARFF and airfield safety.
