Training and Education in Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting

This article reviews the components of training and education in the specialty of aircraft rescue firefighting (ARFF). Although there is currently no federal requirement for the certification of airport fire fighters, most departments require a fire fighter to hold certification under NFPA 1003: Standard for Professional Qualification of Airport Fire Fighters. The author reviews the other professional groups, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), that offer certification systems for this group of fire fighters. The author then describes the curriculum and training offered at Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport’s Fire Training Research Center (FTRC), calling for adoption of this curriculum throughout the country so that aircraft incident command education is standardized and available. A final section considers the need for training for executive officer level personnel and the relevant college degree specializations that are starting to be offered at a few institutions in the U.S. This article is from a special issue on ARFF and airfield safety.
