CITY LANDSCAPE UNIT COMBINES MOWING AND SPRAYING

The activities are described of the reorganized crews of the Parks and Recreation Department. Efficiency was raised by decentralization of operations, standardization of techniques, closer supervision and provision for increased mobility and better equipment. The personnel are assigned to four sections. Details are given of the landscape horticulture section which concentrates on general development and improvement of parks. Within this program are the mowing program, edging program and a chemical spray program. The equipment used is described and the chemical program to control undesirable vegetation along hard-to-mow rights-of-way, fence lines, creeks and drainage ditches is discussed. A weed control program is outlined in which the goal is to control the plant community and then reintroduce native plants and grasses.
