NOISE ATTENUATION BY ACOUSTIC SHIELDING

In Japan, as the environmental quality standards are based on Article 9 of the Basic Law for Environ- mental Pollution Control, the Environmental Quality Standards for Noise was decided upon at a Cabinet meeting on May 25, 1971 and, simultaneously, standards for noise along the roads were also decided. The noise of traffic on the existing trunk roads exceeds the standards by 10 to 15 dB(A) and, therefore, how to reduce the noise to the standards value has become a very important problem about the construction and management of roads. This report describes the experiences of noise barriers, spectrum of motor vehicles noise and height of noise sources of traffic on trunk roads. At the same time, we have proposed a simplified calculation method of the effect of acoustic shielding by using the representative frequency and height of noise sources.
