STANDARD DESIGN OF LIVE LOAD COMPOSITE GIRDER BRIDGE USING AUTOMATIC DESIGN METHOD

Recently the "Specifications for Highway Bridges" has been revised in order to cope with the marked advance in construction technology and construction materials and with the great increase in automobile traffic and traffic load in recent years. With this as a momentum, the Ministry of Construction has formulated a principle of standardizing live-load composite plate-girder bridges and completed the compilation of Vols. 23 through 28 of the "National Standard Designs of Civil Engineering Structures." In the course of compiling the "National Standard Designs," adjustment meetings regarding design and construction policies have been frequently held by the Ministry of Construction with the Road Bureau as the center and with the participation of the ordering Government Agencies and the contractors. In these meetings, unified views of the Ministry have been formed regarding the designs of that part of plate-girder bridges which have not been specified in the new "Specifications for Highway Bridges." The "National Standard Designs of Civil Engineering Structures" is the outcome of discussions in the above-mentioned adjustment meetings. The "Btandard Designs" thus compiled has all been prepared by means of an electronic computer, and the Automatic Designing Program simultaneously developed has been so arranged that any optional designs may be prepared by using the program. As a result, a bridge design which previously took more than two weeks is now completed together with drawing within two hours.
