NOISE IN GROUND TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS

This discussion attempts to state the requirements for noise control, to describe noise sources, and to indicate where research and development can contribute to protecting the environment as ground transportation evolves. Data on noise levels of various rail, transit, and tracked air cushion vehicle systems are presented, and for comparison the noise specification used for developing the DOT ground vehicles is given. The comparison confirms that much work needs to be done to achieve the desired level of quietness.
