A diagnosis of road conditions and road safety in Sub-Saharan Africa

This paper is an independent macro overview of road conditions and road safety in sub-Saharan Africa. It is based on two recent works by the Independent Evaluation Group of the World Bank - the first on improving institutional capability and financial viability in transport infrastructure and services, and the second on road safety. The principles and findings are discussed with particular reference to Africa, the Africa Infrastructure Diagnostic Work, together with possible avenues to address the way forward. Key factors are identified that have led to successful projects and some observations made about changing lending patterns and priorities by the international financial institutions and their shareholders.
