Estimates of the variability at four sampling stages are determined to evaluate the quality of outgoing shipments of kyanite. Several sampling plans are presented along with the associated variance of average kyanite content for each plan. The minimum sample size required to detect a specified shift in the process average is computed. The results of taking a composite sample from a day's production are evaluated along with the variance for the composite. The following conclusions are reached: (1) Evidence indicates good engineering practices in the mining and beneficiation of the kyanite; (2) More precise estimates of the actual quality of the outgoing material will result from improvements in the analytical laboratory; (3) Sampling plans are designed which will determine the minimum number of analyses or which will detect a specified shift in the process average; and (4) Care must be exercised in the use of composite samples.
