FEASIBILITY OF WATER REUSE AT HIGHWAY REST STATIONS

The results from this investigation indicate that wastewater from the facility studied can be used for flushing toilets with minimal additional treatment. The capital cost of altering an extended aeration system with an additional flow scheme, storage and disinfection scheme, and filtration was compared with the capital cost of additional treatment necessary to produce an effluent essentially free from phosphorous and low in organic carbon (essentially a chemical-treatment system). In this case recycling would result in a capital saving of approximately $35,000 per rest area.
