EDUCATION OF THE TRAFFIC TECHNICIAN
An engineering technician is one who, in support of and under the direction of professional engineers or scientists, can carry out in a responsible manner either proven techniques, which are common knowledge among those who are technically expert in a particular technology, or those techniques especially prescribed by professional engineers. This survey indicates that on the average, the desirable ratio of traffic engineering technicians would be 2.75 to one trained engineer for state highway departments. A proposed curriculum for a two-year post high school program in civil engineering technology was developed. Activities to be incorporated into traffic engineering courses courses include traffic operations and control, traffic surveys and studies, basic graphics, mathematics, communication skills, geometric design, highway engineering and elementary surveying.
