STUD WELDING ON 5083 ALUMINUM AND 9% NI STEEL FOR CRYOGENIC USE

This report presents the test results of a program concerning the mechanical and metallurgical effects of stud welding on 5083 aluminum alloy and 9% nickel steel for use in vessels subjected to cryogenic temperatures. V-notch Charpy tests conducted at -196 C on 5083-O aluminum alloy indicate that the base metal notch toughness was unaffected by the application of studs by either arc stud welding or capacitor discharge stud welding. Identical tests on ASTM designation A553 grade A 9% nickel steel indicate that the base metal notch toughness was reduced by approximately 25% by the application of 304 stainless steel arc welded studs with a weld base diameter of 0.340 in.
