FUTURE OF ELECTROLUMINESCENT SOLIDS IN DISPLAY APPLICATIONS

MASS USAGE OF COMPUTING, COMMUNICATION, TRANSPORTATION, AND SECRETARIAL AIDS COULD MULTIPLY THE PRESENT ELECTRONIC DISPLAY AREA BY AT LEAST A FACTOR OF 50 BEFORE THE YEAR 1997. THIS PAPER SHOWS THAT A SIGNIFICANT FRACTION OF THESE DISPLAYS WILL INCORPORATE ELECTROUMINESCENT (EL) SOLIDS INTO THEIR DISPLAY ELEMENTS. A THOROUGH INVESTIGATION OF HUMAN COLOR VISION AND PICTORIAL COLOR SPACE IS LINKED TO CHEMICOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF EL SOLIDS. THE PREFERRED MONOCHROMATIC COLORS FOR SOLID-STATE DISPLAYS ARE 590 NM YELLOW, 620 NM RED, 480 NM BLUE, AND THEIR MIXTURES. GREEN IS FOUND LEAST SUITABLE UNDER WHITE AMBIENT VIEWING AND SHOULD BE BELOW 500 NM. /AUTHOR/
