WHY AUTOMATION SYSTEMS IN HIGHWAY DEPARTMENTS

THE EXTENT AND COMPLEXITY OF THE ACTIVITIES IN WHICH HIGHWAY DEPARTMENTS ARE ENGAGED TODAY, TOGETHER WITH THE INFLEXIBILITY AND SLOW RESPONSE OF MANUAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS, ARE PERSUADING AN INCREASING NUMBER OF STATES TO INSTITUTE COMPUTER APPLICATIONS FOR ADMINISTRATIVE AND TECHNICAL FUNCTIONS. ADVANCES AND APPLICATIONS OF THESE SYSTEMS ARE DISCUSSED, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE INTEGRATED OPERATIONS SYSTEM (IOS) OF THE WISCONSIN DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION.
