A HYBRID CAR FOR USE IN LARGE TOWNS

ROLLAB CO., SWEDEN, HAS DESIGNED A HYBRID VERSION OF A FOUR-SEATER SEDAN, FIAT 128, EQUIPPED WITH A BATTERY AND A SUITABLE GENERATOR, WHICH IS OPERATED BY A CONVENTIONAL INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE. ESTIMATED MAXIMUM SPEED IS 85 KM/HR AND THE TOTAL WEIGHT 1250 KILOGRAMS. THE POWER REQUIREMENT OF THE GENERATOR NEEDED FOR URBAN TRAFFIC WAS DETERMINED TO BE 6 KILOWATTS AND THE WEIGHT OF THE BATTERY TO BE 120 KILOGRAMS, WHICH IS ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF THE REQUIREMENT OF AN ELECTRIC CAR. APART FROM THE EMISSION OF NITROGEN OXIDES THE EXHAUST EMISSION WILL BE SIMILAR TO THAT OF A STIRLING MOTOR. SINCE 80% OF PRIVATE DRIVERS DRIVE LESS THAN 32 KILOMETERS A DAY, MOST TRIPS COULD BE MADE WITHOUT HAVING TO USE THE GENERATOR. THE REPORT INCLUDES A COMPARISON OF THE WEIGHT AND PAYLOAD OF A CONVENTIONAL CAR, A HYBRID CAR AND AN ELECTRIC CAR. /TRRL/
