SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS--REPORT

THIS IS THE REPORT OF THE WORKSHOP WHICH IDENTIFIED, REVIEWED AND EVALUATED THE IMPORTANT RELATIONS BETWEEN THE AMOUNTS AND DISTRIBUTION OF TRAVEL AND THE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES AND SYSTEMS. THE COMPLEX NATURE OF THE ISSUES INVOLVED IN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING ARE DISCUSSED, AS IS ALSO, THE NEED FOR COMPREHENSIVENESS, TIMELINESS, CREDIBILITY AND RELIABILITY. THE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS THAT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED ARE LISTED AND DISCUSSED IN OUTLINE. MOBILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT, ENERGY AND OTHER RESOURCES ARE SOME AREAS IN WHICH REQUIREMENTS WERE EXPRESSED FOR TRAVEL DEMAND FORECASTING. OTHER AREAS OF NEED ARE AESTHETICS, COMMUNITY EFFECTS, SAFETY AND SECURITY, TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM PERFORMANCE AND EFFICIENCY, AND URBAN STRUCTURE. AREAS OF RESEARCH NEED ARE IDENTIFIED. NEW MODELS MUST BE DEVELOPED THAT ARE DIRECTED TOWARD SUBREGIONAL, PROJECT, AND OTHER DEMAND QUESTIONS MOSTLY IN THE SHORT-RANGE AND MEDIUM TIME FRAME. DISAGGREGATE MODELS HAVE THEIR MOST DIRECT APPLICATION IN THE CONTEXT OF SUBREGIONAL AND PROJECT PROBLEMS. THE NEED IS INDICATED FOR INVESTIGATION OF THE UNDERLYING DETERMINANTS OF THE TRAVEL PHENOMENON AND OF THE ACTUAL RELATIONS BETWEEN HUMAN AND URBAN SYSTEMS.
