INTERACTION OF AN AIR-CUSHIONED VEHICLE WITH AN ELASTIC GUIDEWAY

TWO BASIC TYPES OF GUIDEWAYS (SIMPLY SUPPORTED STRUCTURES AND STRUCTURES RESTING ON ELASTIC FOUNDATIONS) ARE CON- SIDERED IN THIS ATTEMPT TO DEVELOP EQUATIONS OF MOTION FOR AN AIR-CUSHIONED VEHICLE SUPPORTED BY AN ELASTIC GUIDEWAY. THE RESPONSE OF THE VEHICLE WAS STUDIED IN RELATION TO PASSENGER CONFORT CRITERIA. EQUATIONS ARE PRESENTED AND THEIR DERIVATIONS ARE EXPLAINED. THE BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEM IS DISCUSSED. A PARAMETIC STUDY IS DESCRIBED IN WHICH CERTAIN PARAMETERS (PHYSICAL PARAMETERS CHARACTERISTIC OF THE HIGH-SPEED AIR-CUSHIONED RESEARCH VEHICLE BEING TESTED FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION) WERE HELD CONSTANT WHILE OTHERS WERE VARIED. GRAPHS ARE PRESENTED WHICH ILLUSTRATE SOME OF THE OBSERVATIONS.
