GOTHENBURG (SWEDEN) USES BARRIERS TO CUT TRAFFIC CONGESTION

A TRAFFIC RESTRAINT SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED IN WHICH THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT IS DIVIDED INTO FIVE ZONES. BARRIERS BETWEEN ZONES FORCE TRAFFIC ENTERING AND LEAVING ANY ZONE TO USE THE RING ROUTE SURROUNDING THE CITY. THE BARRIERS MAY CONSIST OF ONE OF 3 TYPES, NAMELY SOLID WHITE LINES ON THE PAVEMENT; RESERVE AREAS FOR PUBLIC TRANSIT WITH SMALL CONCRETE BARRIERS; OR A HEAVY PHYSICAL BARRIER. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE PLAN AND ITS IMPLEMENTATION. FAVORABLE RESULTS OF THE IMPLEMENTATION ARE DISCUSSED. THESE INCLUDE A REDUCTION OF TRAFFIC FLOW, ACCIDENTS, AND CARBON MONOXIDE LEVELS. THE IMPACT OF THIS PLAN ON COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES IS BEING STUDIED.
