SECTION III: OPERATION AND AUTOMATION-CAPACITY OF SUBURBAN LINES. THE MEANS TO BE EMPLOYED TO ADAPT IT TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRAFFIC

THE PAPER REVIEWS THE CARRYING CAPACITY OF A SUBURBAN ROUTE, AND THE MEANS FOR INCREASING THIS CAPACITY. THE NUMBER OF PLACES AVAILABLE IN THE COACHES AND THE LOAD THE LINE CAN BEAR, DEPEND ON THE LEVEL OF COMFORT, CHARACTERISTICS OF EQUIPMENT, THE SUBSTRUCTURE, AND THE CONDITIONS OF OPERATION. EACH OF THESE PARAMETERS ARE EXAMINED IN SOME DETAIL. RESEARCH IN INCREASING THE CAPACITY MUST BE DIRECTED TO THE ADAPTATION OF THE EXISTING SUBSTRUCTURE AND ITS OPTIMUM UTILIZATION. THE FACTOR CAPACITY AND THE ECONOMIC ASPECTS ARE IMPORTANT IN THE SELECTION OF EQUIPMENT. AUTOMATIC TRAIN TRACTION, AUTOMATIC ROUTE CONTROL (INCLUDING THE METHOD OF ACTIVE INDEXING), AND AUTOMATION AND TRAFFIC CONTROL ARE OTHER ASPECTS REVIEWED.
