DIAL-A-RIDE PROJECT IN ANN ARBOR: PUBLIC RESPONSE

A MAIL SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED IN THE POLITICAL SUBDIVISION IN WHICH THE DIAL-A-RIDE SYSTEM WAS TO BE EXPERIMENTED, AND 6,300 FOUR-PAGE QUESTIONNAIRES WERE MAILED TO ADDRESSES FROM THE REGISTERED VOTER FILE. A SECOND SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED 13 WEEKS AFTER THE SYSTEM WENT INTO OPERATION, AND A THIRD SOURCE OF DATA CONSISTED OF DISPATCH RECORDS MADE IN THE OPERATION OF THE SYSTEM. SIGNIFICANT DIFFERNCES BETWEEN USING AND NONUSING HOUSEHOLDS AND DIFFERENCES AMONG VARIOUS LEVELS OF USE AMONG USER HOUSEHOLDS REQUIRE SPECIAL ATTENTION. PAID ADVERTISING WAS LIMITED TO THE DIRECT MAIL FORMAT. DATA SUGGEST THAT USE AND NONUSE OF THE SERVICE IS RELATED TO VARIOUS FACTORS SUCH AS THE INDIVIDUALS'S CONCEPT OF THE PLACE OF THE AUTOMOBILE IN URBAN TRANSPORTATION AND THE COMPOSITION, STRUCTURE AND LEVELS OF EDUCATION WITHIN THE FAMILY. THE ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE AUTOMOBILE WAS NOTED AS THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR AND WAS PROBED FURTHER. AMONG THE USERS, THE VARIABLE "NUMBER OF TRIPS" WAS STUDIED AND THE POSSIBILITY OF DEVELOPING A PREDICTION FORMULA AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN SETTING THE RANGE OF POTENTIAL RIDERSHIP IS NOTED. RESPONSES TO QUESTIONS ON TAXATION WERE POSITIVE. ALL EVIDENCE POINT TOWARD ENCOURAGEMENT FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AND THE CITY HAS VOTED ADDITIONAL MONIES FOR THE DIAL-A-RIDE PROJECT.
