THE AREA OF OPERATING COSTS, POLITICS AND PUBLIC ACCEPTANCE ARE DISCUSSED BRIEFLY AND THE AREA OF EQUIPMENT IS COVERED IN SOME DETAIL. OPERATING COST IS A FUNCTION OF SERVICE LEVEL AND VEHICLE SIZE AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO THE LATTER IS ILLUSTRATED. CONVENIENCE AS A VARIABLE THAT AFFECTS DEMAND IS DISCUSSED AND THE IMPORTANCE OF VIABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION IN THE POLITICAL ARENA IS POINTED OUT. THE FIELD OF CONSUMER ATTITUDES AND ACCEPTANCE NEEDS RESEARCHING AS DOES THE AREA OF CONSUMER VERSUS COSTS. THE USE OF AUTOMATED SYSTEMS IN FARE COLLECTION AND THE INTERMODAL PROBLEM IS CONSIDERED. COMMUNICATIONS WITHIN THE SYSTEM ARE OF IMPORTANCE. VARIOUS RIGHT-OF-WAY SCHEMES INCLUDING BUS-ACTUATED SIGNALS AND RESERVED LANES AND THE PROBLEM OF SAFETY ARE DISCUSSED. OPINIONS ON ROUTING AND OPERATION AND LIMITS OF DIAL-A-BUS ARE PRESENTED. THE PAPER PRESENTS A DISCUSSION BETWEEN SEMINAR PARTICIPANTS COVERING SUCH TOPICS AS BUS-DESIGN, COACH CONSTRUCTION, FARE COLLECTION, TYPES OF SERVICE, REEVALUATION OF NEW TECHNOLOGY, INCREMENTAL IMPROVEMENTS, REPLACEMENT OF OLD EQUIPMENT AND THE NEED FOR A NASA-LIKE BODY IN THE TRANSPORTATION FIELD WHICH WOULD CENTRALIZE THE DECISION MAKING FUNCTION. THE NEED FOR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS FOR ENROUTE VEHICLE MONITORING AND THE PERFORMANCE OF THE 500-BUS DEMONSTRATION IN CHICAGO ARE DISCUSSED. THE LOW-BID POLICY, WHEN FEDERAL FUNDS ARE INVOLVED, CAME IN FOR COMMENT.
