RESEARCH AND REALITY

THE DEFICIENCY IN TRANSIT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IS NOW RECOGNIZED AND CORRECTIVE ACTION, SUCH AS THE INAUGURATION OF THE HIGH-SPEED GROUND TRANSPORTATION TEST CENTER IN COLORADO AND THE DIRECTION OF DEMONSTRATION PROJECTS BY THE URBAN MASS TRANSPORTATION ADMINISTRATION, HAS BEEN TAKEN. PRAGMATISM IS URGED IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS. THE FEASIBILITY OF APPLICATION OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES, SUCH AS THE TRACKED AIR CUSHION VEHICLE AND THE IMPROVEMENT OF EXISTING SYSTEMS OF THE MAGNITUDE OF THE CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY (CTA), NEEDS TO BE RESEARCHED. THE NEED FOR POLITICAL INVOLVEMENT AND PUBLIC AWARENESS IN HELPING MEET FUNDING REQUIREMENTS OF TRANSIT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IS EMPHASIZED AND SPECIFIC EXPERIENCES OF THE CTA WITH THE CITY COUNCIL AND STATE LEGISLATURE ARE CITED.
