RESEARCH NEEDS OF THE TRANSIT OPERATING INDUSTRY

IN ORDER THAT THE TRANSIT INDUSTRY RESPONDS ADEQUATELY TO PUBLIC DESIRES, IMPROVEMENTS IN FUNDING, MANAGEMENT AND SERVICE QUALITY ARE NEEDED. RESEARCH IS CATEGORIZED INTO THAT PERTAINING TO THE RIDING PUBLIC AND THAT PERTAINING TO IN-HOUSE ACTIVITIES SUCH AS COSTS, PRODUCTIVITY AND EFFICIENCY. ROUTING IS INDICATED AS AN IMPORTANT AREA FOR INVESTIGATION AND RIDERSHIP SURVEYS ARE RECOMMENDED. DIAL-A-BUS IS SUGGESTED AS AN ANSWER IN SOME AREAS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF HEADWAYS IS DISCUSSED. A BUS SPECIFICATION IS BEING DEVELOPED WHICH WOULD INCREASE SPEED AND OPERATION CHARACTERISTICS. BETTER LOADING ZONES, PREFERENTIAL LANES, TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROLS AND PUBLIC COOPERATION ARE NEEDED FOR SPEED IMPROVEMENT. FARE STRUCTURE AND FARE COLLECTION PROCEDURE IS DISCUSSED AND THE NO-FARE POLICY STUDIED. THE EXTENT TO WHICH AMENITIES SUCH AS AIR CONDITIONING, MUSIC, AND SPACE PER INDIVIDUAL, AS WELL AS SOUND LEVELS, CLEANLINESS AND EMPLOYEE ATTITUDES AFFECT TRANSIT RIDERSHIP, NEEDS TO BE RESEARCHED. INCREASED BUS CAPACITY, IMPROVED COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT, AND THE USE OF GAS TURBINES WILL IMPROVE OPERATION EFFICIENCY. THE NEED FOR SAFETY RESEARCH AND PROVISION OF PUBLIC INFORMATION IS INDICATED. POSITIVE PUBLIC ATTITUDE, FINANCIAL AID AND EFFICIENCY RESEARCH WILL PROMOTE GREATER USE OF TRANSIT.
