Development of a system of environmental and energy consumption data for urban road traffic: pilot application in Thessaloniki, Greece

The degradation of the natural environment and the intensity of energy consumption are main components of the urban transport problem. During the last decade, the diminishment of car dependency is highlighted as a major priority of the urban transport policy while local authorities implement measures for the promotion of sustainable mobility. The development of the appropriate strategies depends on the availability of reliable data that describe the relation between traffic and environmental quality. In this context, the purpose of the paper is the presentation of an interdisciplinary methodology for the assessment of road infrastructure, traffic and environmental data in an urban area. The methodology is based on on-site measurements in order to correspond to real traffic conditions. Furthermore, a pilot application for the Thessaloniki city centre is conducted. The paper is concluded with a discussion of the potential contribution of the specific methodology.
