PROJECT SHOWS TINY BUS PROVIDES BIG SERVICE

TWO 16-PASSENGER AIR CONDITIONED DIESEL POWERED "MINI" BUSES ARE PART OF AN EXPERIMENT IN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, JOINTLY FUNDED BY LONGMONT, COLORADO, AND THE REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION DISTRICT (RTD). IT IS A DEMONSTRATION PROJECT FOR RTD, WHICH SERVES AN AREA POPULATED BY 1.3 MILLION PEOPLE AND WHICH INCLUDES THE METROPOLITAN DENVER AREA. NO PUBLIC TRANSIT HAD BEEN AVAILABLE IN LONGMONT FOR MORE THAN A GENERATION WHEN THE MINI BEGAN OPERATING ON FEBRUARY 28, 1972. ONE OF THE MAJOR OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT IS TO PROVIDE MOBILITY FOR SENIOR CITIZENS, WHO COMPOSE 10% OF THE AREA'S POPULATION. THE TWO MINI'S RUN FIVE DAYS A WEEK, 12 HOURS A DAY AND SERVICE 112 STOPS. FOUR DRIVERS ARE USED, TWO FULL-TIME AND TWO PART-TIME. ALL ARE FORMER SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS. OVER A PERIOD OF NINE WEEKS, 30,000 PASSENGERS WERE CARRIED. MARKETING TECHNIQUES, INCLUDING COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT, HAVE PLAYED AN IMPORTANT PART IN PROMOTING THE MINI. FOR EXAMPLE, MINI'S TELEPHONE NUMBER IS WIDELY ADVERTISED, INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE DURING THE ENTIRE SERVICE PERIOD; ROUTE AND FARE INFORMATION WAS MAILED TO EACH OF THE 12,000 HOUSEHOLDS IN LONGMONT. THERE IS NO CASH OR SINGLE-RIDE FARE. INSTEAD, A $.25 TICKET, PURCHASED AT THE TIME OF THE FIRST RIDE, IS VALID FOR THAT ENTIRE DAY. A $1.00 WEEKLY PASS AND A $4.00 MONTHLY PASS ARE ALSO AVAILABLE.
