URBAN GOODS MOVEMENT RESEARCH-A PROPOSED APPROACH

THE IMPORTANCE OF FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE URBAN AREA, COUPLED WITH THE LACK OF BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT URBAN FREIGHT MOVEMENTS, INDICATES THE NEED FOR RESEARCH IN THIS AREA-RESEARCH THAT WILL PROVIDE A DATA BASE TO SUPPORT ANSWERS TO PUBLIC POLICY QUESTIONS. SUCH RESEARCH WOULD HAVE THE BROADEST APPLICABILITY IF IT WERE CONDUCTED WITHIN TWO METROPOLITAN CITIES IN AN URBAN CORRIDOR SETTING. THEN RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN AND BETWEEN THESE CITIES COULD BE MEASURED. THE WHOLE AREA'S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE OUTSIDE WORLD COULD BE INVESTIGATED. FREIGHT RESEARCH CONDUCTED IN SUCH A BROAD SETTING WOULD HAVE FINDINGS WHICH COULD BE GENERALIZED TO MANY OTHER CITIES UNDER SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES. RESARCH ISSUES ARE IDENTIFIED AND SUGGESTIONS MADE ON MODELING A FREIGHT DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM. /AUTHOR/
