Modelling the return of Sydney's trams
Before private vehicles became an accessible and affordable means of transport for the general population, trams served as a dominant mode of public transport in many Australian cities. Many tram networks - except notably Melbourne’s - were decommissioned in the middle of the twentieth century to make way for private vehicles, as they rapidly surpassed public transport in popularity. Once home to Australia’s largest tram network, Sydney is currently working to extend its fledgling light rail system. Using Veitch Lister Consulting’s (VLC) proprietary Zenith strategic transport model of Sydney, this paper intends to evaluate the re-introduction of the Sydney tram network as it stood in the mid-twentieth century and assess its potential to relieve demand on existing modes.
