Principal pedestrian network demonstration project: Camberwell

The aim of the PPND project was to deliver infrastructure and behaviour initiatives that have a measurable impact on walking participation and a reduction in car use. GIS modelling, questionnaire surveys, pedestrian counts, research and corridor audits informed the selection and treatment of two walking corridors. The “Try Walking” behaviour change initiative was delivered in parallel with infrastructure elements. Pedestrian counts have indicated a clear increase in pedestrian activity subsequent to the delivery of infrastructure and a behaviour change initiative. The project sought to reduce car use and to demonstrate a mode change to walking. The behaviour change participants have indicated an increase in walking and a reduction in car use. The evaluation of the project will continued until November 2014 in order to substantiate interim and longer term changes in walking participation.
