Open transport and traffic data: a new 'virtual' infrastructure
The digital age is bringing many opportunities, challenges and disruptions to society. Entrepreneurs and industry are seeking new ways to provide products and services, and one increasing common government response is to declare that government data will be 'open'. This will include transport and traffic related data. It is argued that there needs to be a cultural shift in organisations in the way transport and traffic data is viewed, and hence enhanced approaches to data collection, management and provision by road agencies will be needed, particularly as vehicles become connected and data that flows from cooperative ITS safety and other applications. Open transport and traffic data needs to be seen as a new type of 'virtual' transport infrastructure which will be used by the travelling public just as physical transport infrastructure. This will become the reality in the digital age.
