AESTHETICS OF URBAN MOTORWAYS

THIS PAPER STRESSES THE IMPORTANCE OF DESIGNING URBAN MOTORWAYS AND THEIR ASSOCIATED STRUCTURES SO AS TO ENSURE THE BEST POSSIBLE AESTHETIC EFFECT AND REDUCE VISUAL AND NOISE INTRUSION TO A MINIMUM, PARTICULARLY IN THE VICINITY OF IMPORTANT BUILDINGS. THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THESE PRINCIPLES TO THE PROPOSED LIVERPOOL INNER MOTORWAY SOME SEVEN KILOMETRES IN LENGTH IS DESCRIBED. THIS ROAD, CONCEIVED AS A PART OF A MAJOR URBAN RENEWAL PROJECT, IS INTENDED TO TAKE MOTOR CARS EITHER DIRECTLY INTO VERY LARGE PARKING AREAS OR PAST THE CITY CENTER. THE PAPER DESCRIBES THE FORMS OF STRUCTURES ADOPTED, THE PROPOSALS REGARDING ADJACENT DEVELOPMENT, PROVISION FOR PEDESTRIANS, MATERIALS TO BE USED IN CONSTRUCTION AND LANDSCAPING IN THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY OF THE MOTORWAY. /TRRL/
