SELECTION OF SUBGRADE STABILIZATION MATERIAL IN KYUSHU REGION

Kyushu region has been the geo-history of volcanic activity. Therefore, its geographical and geological features are complicated. Soils originated from volcanic ash are widely distributed, for example, “Sirasu”, “Bora”, and “Kuroboku soil, Akaboku, ” etc. including much organic materials. The alluvial soils in river basin and well-known “Ariake clay” with thick layer are distributed. As above mentioned, the some special soils are distributed in this region. In case of the purpose for the subgrade of road and/or foundation of structure are considered on the sites, the considering about judgment of physical properties of soil and the appropriate method for stabilization become very important. This report proposes a stabilizing method obtained from following researches; (1) the arrangement of a lot of data based on soil test results in the laboratory which test samples were collected from various areas in Kyushu over many years, (2) a method for selection of stabilization material based on soil characteristics and its necessary amount, (3) the restrictive countermeasure for eluting hexavalent chromium when cement system is used as stabilizing material.
