STATEWIDE INTERMODAL TRANSPORTATION PLANNING IN THE LESS URBANIZED STATE

PAST AND PRESENT EFFORTS OF THE TENNESEE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS AND OF URBAN TRANSPORTATION STUDIES TO COLLECT MODAL AND INTERMODAL DATA ARE REVIEWED. INTER-MODAL PLANNING GAINED EMPHASIS AT THE STATE LEVEL DURING COMPLETION OF THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY FUNCTIONAL CLASSIFICATION NEEDS STUDY (1970--1990), WHEN THE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS WAS DESIGNATED COORDINATING AGENCY FOR THE NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION PLANNING STUDY. FUTURE INTERMODAL TRANSPORTATION PLANNING IN TENNESSEE WILL BE ENHANCED AS LONG-RANGE PRIORITY- PROGRAMMING TECHNIQUES ARE EVALUATED AND A STATEWIDE DATA BANK IS DEVELOPED.
