500-TON CAPABILITY SLIDE-ON/OFF VESSEL
The Daniella, of 2600 dwt, has a single hold with a cubic capacity of about 110,000 cu ft and a maximum free deck area of 41.5x13.4 m ( 136 ft 4 in by 44 ft ), fully strengthened for heavy loads. The hydraulic lift platform fitted in the hold is capable of lifting or lowering parcels of up to 400 tons to and from the botton of the hold to deck level. Associated with this gear, which is powered by four hydraulic rams, is a specially designed retractable roadway which will enable the load, once raised out of the hatch, to be slid across the bulwarks onto the shore transport. This part of the ships equipment is capable of carrying lifts of up to 500 tons, which would remain on deck as deck cargo. The load is slid sideways on friction resistant pads across the ships side, pulled by ships gear ( she is fitted with six 10 ton winches and plenty of tackle ) directly on to its position on the hydraulic lift platform. It is then lowered to the bottom of the hold and hove either forward or aft. During the entire cargo operations, stability and attitude are maintained by use of 1200 tons of ballast in deep double bottoms and the wing ballast tanks extending the full depth of the hold.
