TRENDS IN RESEARCH DURING THE FISCAL YEAR: MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE

THIS SUMMARY OF RESEARCH TRENDS IS PART OF THE 1951 REPORT OF THE HIGHWAY RESEARCH BOARD TO THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF STATE HIGHWAY OFFICIALS. IN THE AREA OF CONCRETE AND BITUMINOUS CONSTRUCTION, PROJECTS ARE UNDERWAY TO DETERMINE DENSITY, STABILITY, AND ASPHALT CONTENT CORRELATION WITH FIELD BEHAVIOR, TO DETERMINE INTERNAL STRAIN IN CONCRETE WITH INDUCTANCE GAUGES, TO DETERMINE FREEZE-THAW EFFECTS ON CONCRETE, TO ISOLATE AGGREGATE MATERIALS THAT CAUSE DETERIORATION, TO STUDY CONCRETE CURING BY MEMBRANES, TO INVESTIGATE THE PROPERTIES OF AIR-ENTRAINED CONCRETE, AND TO DETERMINE THERMAL AND HYGRIC VOLUME CHANGES IN HARDENED PORTLAND CEMENT PASTE AND CONCRETE. IN THE AREA OF GENERAL MATERIALS, PROJECTS ARE UNDERWAY TO DETERMINE MINERAL AGGREGATE CHARACTERISTICS INFLUENCING BITUMINOUS AND PORTLAND CEMENTS, TO INVESTIGATE PROPERTIES OF LIMESTONE, COQUINA SHELLS, LIGHT WEIGHT AGGREGATES, SCORIA (BURNT SHALE), TO USE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY IN MATERIALS LOCATION, TO TEST ASPHALT AND ASPHALTIC MIXES SUCH AS RUBBER, TO EVALUATE MARKING PAINTS AND THE DURABILITY OF GLASS BEADS, AND TO PREPARE A MANUAL OF WELDING TECHNIQUES. IN THE AREA OF MAINTENANCE, PROJECTS ARE UNDERWAY TO STUDY CONCRETE PAVEMENT PUMPING AND ITS ALLEVIATION, TO PREPARE COST ANALYSIS RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PAVEMENT MARKING, TO RECOMMEND PAVEMENT SALVAGING PRACTICES, TO INVESTIGATE SPRING BREAKUPS DUE TO FROST ACTION, AND TO DETERMINE CURRENT SAFETY PRACTICES BY THE VARIOUS STATE MAINTENANCE UNITS.
