TRENDS IN RESEARCH DURING THE FISCAL YEAR: DESIGN

THIS SUMMARY OF TRENDS WAS MADE AS PART OF THE 1951 ANNUAL REPORT OF THE HIGHWAY RESEARCH BOARD TO THE AMERICAN ASSCIATION OF STATE HIGHWAY OFFICIALS. THE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF CRITERIA FOR PROPER DESIGN OF PRINCIPAL HIGHWAYS AND URBAN STREETS IS EMPHASIZED. THE PROBLEMS OF WAYSIDES AND RECREATION AREAS IS TO BE REVIEWED BY THE ROADSIDE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE. THE FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DESIGN COMMITTEE (1) COMPILED A LISTING OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DESIGN METHODS CURRENTLY IN USE; (2) CORRELATED RANGES OF THICKNESS WITH GIVEN SUBGRADE MATERIALS; AND (3) PROVIDED EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN PROCEDURES FOR TESTING OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS. PROJECTS ON CONTINUOUS STEEL REINFORCEMENT, JOINT SPACING, THE CUTTING OF CONTRACTION JOINTS, CONCRETE RESURFACING, BITUMINOUS RESURFACING, AND COMPARATIVE DESIGN ARE REPORTED BY THE COMMITTEE ON CONCRETE PAVEMENT DESIGN. TESTS OF SAFETY AND RIDEABILITY, AND CORRELATION OF ROUGHOMETER AND SKID TESTS WITH PAVEMENT TYPE, DESIGN, AND MIX ARE UNDERWAY IN THE AREA OF ROAD SURFACE PROPERTIES. STUDIES BY THE BRIDGE RESEARCH COMMITTEE INCLUDE (1) EFFECTS OF WIND FORCES ON MODELS OF VARIOUS BRIDGE SPANS; (2) DISTRIBUTIONS OF LIVE LOADS ON BRIDGE FLOORS; (3) HIGH STRENGTH BOLTS IN FABRICATING STEEL STRUCTURES; (4) DRIVING RESISTANCE AND SUPPORT VALUE OF STEEL TUBE PILING; (5) HEATING OF BRIDGE DECKS AND CONCRETE PAVEMENTS; (6) TESTS ON CORRUGATED METAL FOR LARGE CULVERTS.
