Using Cloud Computing to Increase Efficiency in Transportation Modeling

Transportation analysis has become more demanding on both analysts and computing infrastructure. Decision makers need answers to complex policy questions which have resulted in highly sophisticated analysis models. These models handle large amounts of data and are computing intensive. Transportation analysts are spending more time managing the computing resources and less time on analysis. Organizations are also spending a larger percent of their budget on updating and maintaining their computing resources used for analysis. This has resulted in transportation analysis becoming the niche of a few people or organizations. Cloud computing provides an avenue to reduce the burden on analysts and to make transportation analysis easily available to a wide variety of users from decision makers to general public. Use of cloud computing can effectively hide the complexity of the analysis set-up and provide the users with a simplified interface to analyze, interact and collaborate on transportation planning.
