MAKING THE BEST USE OF A DIESEL FLEET

This article briefly describes the situation which confronted one major railway administration and provides an example upon which discussion about the efficient use of any diesel fleet can be based, whether that fleet is expanding or contracting. The expending situation is one which offers various obvious options; decisions on what is to the best advantage in the long term are vital but they can be taken progressively. On the other hand, the contracting situation, especially if it closely follows a substantial fleet increase made in relatively short time, is one of much greater complexity and decisions depend on many factors other than those of a purely engineering nature.
